Results are dependent upon the following:
- Ingredients – the quality and quantity contained in the formulation
- Delivery – how the ingredients are introduced into the skin
- Packaging – protecting the integrity of the product
Ingredients Correct labeling requires manufacturers to list ingredients in descending order based on their concentration. Depending upon the ingredient, very small amounts may be effective…so don’t assume that its position on the list is critical. Additionally, skincare labels can be deceiving due to a myriad of variations in the way an ingredient is named. (For example, Vitamin C may be listed as ascorbic acid, sodium ascorbyl phosphate, magnesium ascorbyl phosphate or tetrhexyldecyl ascorbate.) Most importantly, the quality of the ingredients is paramount to the efficacy of the product! Keep in mind that cheaper brands contain fillers, unnecessary fragrances and irritants which bulk them up. These tactics trick the consumer into thinking they are getting more for their money.
Delivery Without an intelligent delivery system, product ingredients will simply sit on the surface of the skin. A results-oriented product is designed to create a specific action within the skin. Which means, that in order for the ingredients to nourish and repair, they must reach the inner cells of the skin. The technical term for this process is called encapsulation; the inner part contains the active ingredients, while the outer portion dissolves to release the active ingredients. The effectiveness of a product’s delivery system is directly related to the integrity of the manufacturer as well as the freshness of the ingredients.
Packaging Proper packaging is essential in order to insure that the ingredients remain fresh and therapeutic. You don’t want to purchase a product that has been sitting in a warehouse for months or even years before it hits the shelves of a store. Extreme heat and/or cold can destroy the efficacy of the ingredients. Airless pump-style containers are great since they are designed to prevent the product from contamination due to bacteria and germs in the outside air. Quality products with active ingredients will include expiration dates clearly marked on the packaging.
